Teen Confirmation

Welcome to our Teen Confirmation program!  The Cathedral offers the Sacrament of Confirmation to eighth grade students.  In the 2,000 year tradition of our Church, the Sacrament of Confirmation has been seen as the second sacrament of initiation, after Baptism and before Holy Communion.  (Pope St. Pius X in the early 20th century lowered the age of First Holy Communion to the age of reason [roughly 7], so now in most places, Eucharist comes before Confirmation.)  What this means is that this sacrament is not the “Sacrament of Graduation” marking the end of our children’s spiritual journey, but rather an indelible grace in which our teens are sealed in the gifts of the Holy Spirit first made present in Baptism, empowering them to fulfill his/her Baptismal call to a life of holiness.

Preparing for the Sacrament

There are several steps for preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation.  These include choosing a sponsor, choosing a patron saint, and getting involved in our parish.  We also urge our teens and families to make their faith a priority in their lives starting right now by doing the following:

  • Attending Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation.
  • Parents should make their own faith a priority by seeking opportunities for adult faith formation in the parish.
  • Teens should make their own faith a priority by being an active member our Edge program.  (Edge meets on Wednesdays from 6-8 PM in the Youth Room, and is FREE for all registered Confirmation candidates, with no additional paperwork required.)
  • Supporting a parish ministry with the gift of your time and talents.
  • Having regular family prayer time and discussing Confirmation as a family.
  • Returning to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, especially if it’s been awhile.

While we have an excellent team of adult and teen volunteers who, along with our priests, will be journeying with our eighth graders, the best and truest example of faith comes from their parents.

For you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses.. (Acts 1:8)
